The hang clean is fundamentally one of the most important lifts for developing hip and spinal extension for athletic performance. It aids in jumping, sprinting, and creates higher force production from the ground by generating enough muscular output so the hips knees and ankles have to leave the ground and get under the bar. Notice the torque and toe flexion of the feet so I can extend. My feet are screwed in the ground very tight so when I extend my spine, I can maximize energy from the ground up. When I catch the bar at the crease of the hip my legs are bent so the release does not put me in a compromised position. Start light and work your way up slowly! Many coaches have be rid of them in the PT world and its a shame because of the amount of middle aged adults who need to increase their spinal extension. Generally, lifts great for athlete’s are great for anyone; and anyone can be an athlete. I created this because I went from a broken, slouched combat veteran to a leader in performance. There are only a few other Olympic lifts that maximize what cleans do, so learn and get on them.
