What do we need reverse mode for in sports? Just about everything, from slowing down and deceleration, to breakdown and change of direction (COG). The ability to recover kinetic force and to activate the SCC stretch shortening cycle is vital for any major sport at the youth or professional level. It is often undervalued, with many trainers and coaches not understanding its importance to protecting the patella tendon and major knee ligaments. If as coaches we can train athlete’s and individuals to move through various planes of motion with precision and speed, then the likely hood of injury during gametime situations goes down. The ankle joint can go in a complete circle, so by understanding reactive shock training and quick CNS responses from added stimuli, coaches can prepare the feet for battle. I perform these after hip extension via cleans, snatches, high pulls, or mix and match them with front plane strength like side lunges to maximize muscle proprioception.
