Barbell high pull (clean prep)

High pulls are utilized to prep for ideal force production in the hang clean. The intent should be set to maximize torque from the feet and generate power from a strong hinge position. This enable the athlete to create more force by screwing the feet into the ground. Keeping the midline braced, as I hinge; I keep my big toe down hard so that the force from the hinge does not pull me back. Here’s where cleans and pulls get tricky. In order to make the weight feel lighter, I need to create spinal extension as I hinge without losing my core. It takes practice with light weight and it takes strong internal core muscles and glutes to not break down. Notice my grip is slightly hooked. This is so when I pull the bar my elbows don’t come out far; slowing the path of the bar down rapidly. Keep the bar close to your body! Try 3 sets of 3-5 and then catch.
